The Political Science department is offering a hands-on experience in our nation’s capital during Spring Break, March 10-14, 2024. Students and faculty will travel to the nation’s capital for an intensive five-day, four-night, hands-on seminar in government and politics. We will tour and meet officials at the White House, Congress and Supreme Court, as well as network with DC-area alumni and friends. The intention of the experiential trip is to bring government alive, and thus provide students the opportunity to learn in real-world settings by taking them to our nation’s capital.
Few students have seen or experienced the concepts and themes that are invoked in the classroom and the planned field experience provides the opportunity for students to make use of class content first hand, learn from their experience in the field, and apply what they have learned. The D.C. trip offers NIU students the unique chance to directly experience the power of history and government. Students experience a lot of learning opportunities on the trip that they would not find anywhere else. The learning opportunities and benefits of engaging students are limitless!
During the time in Washington, D.C., NIU students will meet with elected officials, advocacy groups and non-governmental organizations that work in the area of U.S. and international development. These exchanges with prominent members of the D.C. community provide students training in effective communication and helps to develop self-confidence and leadership skills. Through these interactions, students become empowered and come to realize that they have a meaningful role to play in the world around them.
