In the midst of turmoil, some scholars and students have come to continue their studies in the United States at different universities, including NIU. Often these students have little or no financial support from their home country. While they often qualify for graduate assistant positions, these positions do not cover all costs, and they are not eligible to work off campus given their student visa status.
When NIU employs students with a graduate assistantships, they waive tuition costs and provide a small living stipend. But the GA appointment does not cover fees and health insurance. The health insurance costs in particular have risen sharply in recent years, so the combined costs are approximately $2,500 per semester. The goal of this campaign is to raise the costs of these expenses for four students – a total goal of $10,000.
Matching Funds
We have reached out to current and retired NIU faculty and secured a matching fund of $2,300 to kick off the drive. If you donate any amount--$10, $50, $100, $200, or more--that donation will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, up to $2,300.
Everything helps! Giving at any level will support these students and get them closer to secure, stable healthcare.
