The NIU Jazz Orchestra Travel Fund has been created in order to support NIU’s jazz students in efforts to engage in outreach and to take part in the greater music industry in meaningful and fruitful capacities.
Recently, the NIU Jazz Orchestra was invited to participate in the 2023 Jack Rudin Jazz Championship. This prestigious festival is hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center at Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City, and features “ensembles from ten of the most well-regarded university jazz programs in the country.”

Opportunities such as the Jack Rudin Jazz Championship provide for students not only the uniquely challenging goal of performance at a high level, but the chance to meet and interact with distinguished jazz artists, to encounter fellow jazz students from around the country, to share their craft and engage with an entirely new audience, and most importantly, to learn about jazz music’s history, practice, and impact in order to become informed and diligent participants in the jazz community.
Professor Thomas and the members of the NIU Jazz Orchestra thank you for your time, thought, and contribution.
Plenty of excellent music was made in room 155—a tier exclusively for nostalgic donors!
Above and beyond! This allows NIU, like Louis Armstrong, to be jazz ambassadors to the world!
