Established by NIU alumnus Robert Eickhoff, '78, and his wife, Nikki, their scholarship provides financial aid for unforeseen emergencies, books and assistance for living expenses. Current full-time NIU veteran students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees are eligible. Currently, there are 472 veterans attending NIU.
Robert, himself a veteran of the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne, is passionate about supporting veteran Huskies. He shares:
“As we celebrate Veterans Day on Nov. 11, it is the perfect time to remember that we still have men and women who have defended this country, and there are those still prepared to defend it. When done, many will enroll in universities to start, continue or complete their degrees. Nikki and I, along with our daughter, know first-hand what the financial challenges can be. As a young family of three in the 1970s, my benefits were just at the poverty level. We supplemented that income by both working part-time jobs. I coordinated my class schedule with Nikki's work schedule so one of us was home watching our 3-year-old daughter. It was the best of times and it was the toughest of times. It is just as challenging for these vets today."
