NIU: Nonprofit and NGO Studies

“We create stronger organizations and better leaders.” - Dr. Alicia Schatteman, Director of the Center for Nonprofit and NGO Studies

About the Center for Nonprofit and NGO Studies:

Since its formation in 2010, the Center for Nonprofit and NGO Studies at Northern Illinois University has helped to better serve the NIU community and support organizations within the nonprofit sector. As the only undergraduate non-profit program at a public university in the state, the Center acknowledges the gap between developed professionals on the brink of retirement, and the next generation of leaders necessary to take their place.

The Center offers an interdisciplinary program, in which students learn the skills to not only be good leaders in the nonprofit sector, but other skills that will help them excel in life, as well. The Center accomplishes this through hands-on learning available by internships and consulting and research service.

The Center is a place where anyone, whether researchers or individuals, can come for the latest and the best practices that are going on in the nonprofit sector.

The Center for Nonprofit and NGO Studies Mission and Vision:

Vision

The vision of the Center for Nonprofit and NGO Studies is to understand the role of nonprofits and NGOs in society and in the world; to analyze social structures and create social change; and to improve lives and serve communities.

Mission

The center is committed to the growth and development of civil society through research, community engagement and training the next generation of community leaders.

The Center has three main areas of engagement:

  • Educational (courses and curriculum training students)
  • Research (both applied as well as academics)
  • Community engagement (connect students through nonprofits community organizations in general, webinars, networking events, meetings)

Where do donations go?

Fundraised dollars from various donors goes to support students, typically juniors and seniors, and make an impact in the following ways:

  • Completion Scholarships to address financial barriers students may have when completing their degree. Many students have been on the cusp of taking a pause on their education or dropping out altogether. Completion scholarships provide the extra boost many students need in order to persist and finish strong.
  • Experiential Learning, Community Engagement, and Professional Development Opportunities such as travel to conferences, workshops, field trips, and research opportunities. An example would be traveling out of DeKalb for nonprofit site visits to see how organizations run and operate.
  • Textbook and Application Fees for things such as membership into nonprofit honor societies.

Through your donation and support, you can help the Center realize their mission of creating well-rounded leaders who are well-versed in all the areas necessary to run a successful nonprofit organization (budgeting, finance, critical thinking, the ability to write and present, and so much more).

Your donation helps to create opportunities for our students, where they can develop these skills through not only the classroom side of academics, but also the hands-on experience that gives them a good foothold in understanding the sector. Your donation will help make true impact.
