As an inspiring professor, prolific author, ardent researcher, brilliant scholar, and generous philanthropist, Dr. Carla Montgomery made a profound and lasting impact at Northern Illinois University.
The NIU Foundation honors Dr. Montgomery’s legacy with an invitation to others to support the university and students she loved.
Carla gave to NIU every year for more than three decades. One of her endowments helps graduate school students travel to present their research; another ensures that the NIU Libraries will always have the resources to make acquisitions. Carla also supported scholarships in geology and geochemistry, providing students with valuable hands-on field camp experiences. She supported graduate assistantships, the women’s golf program, the music program, and made generous contributions to other donors’ initiatives.
In 2015, Dr. Montgomery was honored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a Distinguished Faculty Award. The NIU Alumni Association chose her to receive its prestigious F. R. Geigle Service Award in 2011. In 2013, Carla Montgomery was awarded the NIU Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award for Philanthropy.
Dr. Montgomery’s personal, professional, and philanthropic contributions will ensure the success of generations of students at Northern Illinois University.

The following endowed scholarships were established by Dr. Montgomery:
Dr. Carla Montgomery Fund for Music - provides support to acquire, maintain, and repair musical instruments.
Dr. Carla Montgomery Graduate Scholarship in Geochemistry - provides scholarship support for graduate students in the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences.
Dr. Carla Montgomery Undergraduate Scholarship in Geology - provides scholarship support for an undergraduate student who is a declared major in the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences.
Dr. Carla Montgomery Two Millionth Volume Library Endowment - provides support for the purchase of library material in all formats in any academic unit at NIU.
Dr. Carla Montgomery Field Camp Scholarship Fund - provides support for Geology and Environmental Geosciences students who attend NIU's summer field camp.
Graduate Deans' Fund - provides support for the scholarship and creative artistry of graduate students at NIU.
